As much as the original version/first recording of Burt Bacharach and Hal David’s classic song performed by Dionne Warwick is iconic, this version is something to marvel over. I was never really sold on Hayes’ vocal abilities before I heard this song (admittedly, outside of his songs South Park as Chef and the “Shaft” theme song, I hadn’t ventured deep into his back catalogue), but the emotional depth he adds to the song along with the powerful musical arrangements (that are equally funky as they are gut wrenching at points) definitely show that Hayes was vocally as soulful as the best of them. Out of all the covers Hayes ever did (and there were a few), I don’t think he ever reached these heights again. Just a masterful cover.
Which is saying something seeing as the original was pretty great in it’s own right.
